Claude Research for beginners: investigate a topic step by step

Claude Research can investigate a question through multiple searches and return an answer with citations. Depending on your setup, it may also use connected internal context. Beginners should start with public information and a question that can be checked independently.

1. Define the decision

Instead of ‘Tell me about remote work,’ ask: ‘Should a 20-person software company adopt a four-day office schedule in 2027? Compare retention, hiring, collaboration and cost evidence from the United States and Europe.’

2. Enable Research and add context

Open Claude, select Research if available, and add only relevant files or connected sources. Access may vary by plan. Begin with the smallest permission and data set needed.

3. Copy this first prompt

‘Investigate [question] to help [audience] decide [decision]. Prioritize primary and recent sources. Compare at least two competing explanations. For every major conclusion, show the evidence, confidence level and an important limitation. End with unanswered questions.’

4. Challenge the result

Ask for contrary evidence, alternative interpretations and the weakest citation. This is often more valuable than asking for a prettier rewrite.

5. Verify and export

Open original sources behind numbers, legal statements and quotations. Check dates and regional relevance. Then turn verified findings into a memo, FAQ or presentation outline.

Privacy and common mistakes

Connected services widen the information available to the agent. Review organizational policy and permissions. Do not mistake length for depth: if you cannot trace a claim, do not publish or act on it.
