AI in Finance, Insurance and Accounting: Faster Analysis Requires Stronger Controls

AI can accelerate reconciliation, reporting and claims work, but regulated decisions still depend on data lineage, review and accountable judgment.

Finance is rich in documents, repeated workflows and structured decisions, making it attractive for AI. Models can extract fields from invoices, summarize filings, draft variance commentary and prioritize claims. The business opportunity is substantial, but so is the cost of a confidently wrong output.

01Where AI fits first

Low-risk assistance should come before autonomous decisions. Useful starting points include document intake, exception detection, research summaries and draft explanations that a qualified employee reviews. Credit, pricing, fraud and claims decisions require stronger governance because errors can affect legal rights and financial outcomes.

02How work changes

Routine compilation declines. Professionals spend more time investigating exceptions, challenging assumptions and explaining results to decision-makers. Data lineage becomes essential: every consequential number should be traceable to a source, transformation and reviewer.

03The control problem

Language models are optimized for plausible output, not auditability. A generated explanation may sound coherent while citing the wrong period or omitting a contradictory record. Institutions need approved data boundaries, source-linked outputs, role-based access, retention rules and human sign-off for material decisions.

04A concrete 90-day pilot

Choose one internal report or reconciliation process. Establish baseline hours, error rates and review effort. Run AI in parallel with the existing process, never as the system of record. Classify discrepancies, test edge cases and estimate the financial impact of errors. Move to assisted production only after reviewers can reproduce the result.

AI can make finance faster. Trust comes from proving how the answer was produced, who challenged it and who remains accountable.
